Learning to Drink

TerraDactyl has started showing interest in drinking out of cups.  We started with water.  For obvious reasons.  In the picture above, she is asking for "more" in sign language after completely dowsing herself in water.  I didn't even fill her cups up.  I was giving her like 2 oz at a time.  But she did back-to-back dumpings, so she was pretty thoroughly soaked.  You can see in the picture below she even managed to get the back of her shoulder wet!

But, as it's been over a month since I've posted, TerraDactyl has definitely made progress.  Mostly when she drinks out of a cup now, it's got oat milk in it.  Not cow milk.  Because the good lord clearly has a sense of humor, my child is incapable of drinking cow milk.

I'm still experimenting to discover the extent of her milk issues.  Drinking cow milk is like insta-purge.  Cheese (like cheddar, Colby, etc.)  seems to have a milder reaction:  red on face and snuggling (so I think maybe a belly ache).  I've yet to get much farther, I'm planning on trying hard cheese, yogurt, butter, and goat milk.  But really.  Finding the extent of her issues requires the willingness to clean up vomit.  And often, I just don't really want to deal with that.  Fortunately, TerraDactyl bounces back pretty quickly after she pukes, but still, I feel bad when she feels bad.

Which brings us back to the oat milk.  It seems to be her favorite so far.  She also likes flax milk.  TerraDactyl was SUPER excited to try macadamia milk because the carton was blue, but she was sorely disappointed.  She was also willing to try Sesame milk, even after I made it very clear that it was not oat milk.  But after a sip she set it aside.  I was curious, so I finished off her glass and I immediately spit it out into the sink.  I think that's the first time TerraDactyl actually drank something that I spit out.  :D

So yeah, between the violent egg and milk induced vomiting, I've found myself researching a lot of vegan recipes.  It's kind of funny.  We are very much not vegans (not that I have anything against vegans, it's just not us).  And TerraDactyl loves meat.  Meat is the thing she will most consistently eat and enjoy new variations of.  But, I still end up cooking her vegan meals.  And when I'm feeling particularly ironic, I add meat to the vegan recipe.  :)

Just for reference, all these pics are like 2 months old.  I've got quite the backlog, since I took such a long break from posting.

And for good measure, here's a video:

  1. She and I eat Spaghettios the same way!
It's good to see you back on the blogging scene--your posts are always enjoyable.
Our little guy is having trouble drinking, too, and he hasn't even gotten to standard cups yet. The transition from bottle to sippy cup has been so unsuccessful that we're now taking him to a specialist. We'll get it figured out, for sure, but I totally agree: it feels bad when our children feel bad.
Good luck with the meat-lover's vegan platters ;)

    1. I'm sure you've tried all sorts of things, so if it's not helpful, ignore this. TerraDactyl always wants to do/use the things I do. I've got a water bottle w/ a spout and straw (Contigo Autospout), so TerraDactyl always wants to drink out of mine and she was pretty excited when she got her own kid water bottle w/ a spout and straw. She never really got the hang of hard sippy cups, only the soft silicone tops (and straws). Good luck!
