Our Deer Friends

Yesterday morning, DH came into TerraDactyl's room all excited and demanded that we come with him and HURRY!  So we all hurried back to his office and looked out the French doors.  And saw...

Deer!

Deer!  There were two of them, just wandering around just outside the fence.  Eating and exploring.  They hung out there for hours.  Definitely all morning, probably for 5 hours or so.

Nice view, you've got here...

It was pretty cool.  Eventually, they hopped the fence at the bottom of our property and wandered off.  But before bed, one of them came back and hung out some more at our place.

Where's Waldo?

It was kind of funny that while DH and I were being all quiet and excited watching the deer, Riley and TerraDactyl were romping all over the office and growling at each other.  They were so noisy growling and laughing and playing chase/keep away/tug-o-war.  It didn't seem to bother the deer though.  I thought it might because I've scared birds away by walking in front of the French doors, but the deer didn't seem to care.

TerraDactyl likes watching the birds, too

So that was super exciting.  DH's hoping they'll stick around.  We talked about getting a salt lick or something for them.  Spring has also brought a bunch of birds.  DH has a great view of the birds as they come to look for food in our backyard.  He's thinking of making a bird guide for our house, cataloging all the different kinds he's identified.

One unforeseen consequence of welcoming birds into our yard however, is the danger to Riley's toys.  Riley regularly leaves toys outside.  It's not so bad when it's his Frisbee, but when he leaves stuffed animals outside... it's annoying.  They get dirty and waterlogged.  And now, potentially disemboweled.  I saw a bird stealing the stuffing out of a toy the other day.  It'll probably make a great nest - nice and soft and won't get all soggy in the rain.

So proud of herself for getting that sock off!

  1. Will the salt lick be within bow distance of your back porch?

    1. Probably. BUT, these deer are our friends, not food. Although... it might depend on how long the coronapocalypse goes on...
