It's Never Too Early to Crate Train

One of the best things DH did when training Riley was teach him the "Kennel" command.  When given this command, Riley goes to his crate and lays down in it.  He'll stay there until he's calmed down and then he'll come back to join us.  In recognition of the usefulness of this command, I've decided to teach it to TerraDactyl.

Kennel!

Just kidding.  But she is very interested in exploring Riley's crate -- whether it's empty or not.

Scooch over, there's room for two if we squish.

One of the interesting things TerraDactyl has started doing in the last couple of days is...  wiggling a leg.  Sometimes it's when she's crawling (usually when she crawls over a toy and it gets stuck on her knee).  She'll kind of kick the leg in and out a few times like she's trying to dislodge the toy.  But when she's standing...  It looks like she's trying to do a tendu (little ballet kick).  I'm thinking this is learning to balance on one leg in preparation for walking.  It's exciting!  But also worrisome.  TerraDactyl's no longer got bruises on her head all the time.  I'm not looking forward to going back to that.  Plus the whole fact that this is just going to up her speed stats is also worrisome.

Side tendu...  who needs a barre when you've got a cube?

Oh!  Another development!  TerraDactyl has started (occasionally) choosing to back herself off of steps feet first!  She's gotten off the hearth at least three times all by herself without any prompting or manipulating on my part.  I've just been hovering, clapping, and praising excessively.  I'm super excited about this development.  Since TerraDactyl likes climbing so much, I feel so much better now that she at least knows the theory of how to get down safely.  It's not perfect -- she's also using the exact same technique to dismount the couch, which is much taller and will probably result in her over rotating and falling on her butt/back.  But at least that's still better than her preferred head first approach.

Eenie meenie miney moe

Now for the bad news...  That Wiwoo mp3 player I was so excited about?  Well, it clearly states it's for 3 years old and up.  But there weren't any tiny swallowing hazards or anything, so I risked it.  It's already broken.  TerraDactyl dropped it off the changing table too many times.  The battery was glued to a circuit piece and ripped it right off the circuit board.  It's still adorable and TerraDactyl still likes playing with it, but we had to come up with a different solution to playing music.  DH found a $5 tracfone, so we've been using that.  It seems insane to me that it's cheaper to buy a cell phone than an mp3 player, but...  whatever.  I used to be amazed at how young kids are when parents buy them phones, but here I am, giving my kid a phone before she can even talk!  (Don't worry, there's no cell phone plan to go with it).

Happy Apple is SUPER noisy when dropped directly onto hardwood floors.
